Written by Ji Junxiang
The Yuandynasty playwright Ji Junxiang adapted The Orphan of Zhao,
a tale passed down through oral tradition, into the classical Chinese drama form known as zaju.
Although he is credited with six such plays, The Orphan of Zhao is the only one that survives in its entirety.
Hailed as “a tragedy worthy of the world stage,” it remains one of the most enduring works in Chinese theatrical history.
Often referred to as the “Hamlet of the East,”
the play continues to be reinterpreted and performed around the world.
Adapted & Directed by Koh Sun-woong
Since founding Play Factory Mabangzen in 2005, Koh Sunwoong has written,
adapted, and directed a bold and eclectic body of work that has taken the Korean theater world by storm.
His major productions include The Chalk Circle, Learoejeon, Killbeth, Hongdo, On an Azure Day, The Stainless Steel King, and Lucky Man Show.
Koh has worked across genres, directing musicals such as The Sorrows of Young Werther, Arirang, and Gwangju;
traditional Korean operas including Rabbit’s Eight Sufferings, Madame Ong, and Mr. Heungbo; and Western operas such as 1945
and Macbeth—firmly establishing himself as one of the most celebrated directors in Korea.
His 2015 production of The Orphan of Zhao: The Seed of Revenge with the National Theater Company of Korea swept the country’s major theater awards.
With his distinctive blend of dynamic storytelling and incisive humor, Koh continues to infuse the stage and everyday life with vitality and energy.
