“I like it. The name says it all. There’s no substitute.”

Sang Young Park’s The Tears of an Unknown Artist, or Zaytun Pasta presents a new literary paradigm in Korea by playfully unravelling some of the hottest issues in contemporary society. In NTCK’s stage adaption of the work, young creatives and actors bring to life Park’s rhythmic sentences and lively characters. The first-person narrator ‘I’ hopes to make a queer film the likes of which the world has never seen before, while Wangsha dreams of becoming a dancer. It’s the story of young people with dreams of their own. The message may not be grand but it cannot be substituted.

To those of us running towards an unknown destination:

We’re surrounded by stories of young people that are insignificant yet joyful and pathetic yet cheerful. With nothing special about us, have we become small dots in the world? Perhaps, we’ve failed to achieve even that. Even so, there’s no harm in tasting failure once in a lifetime. The fragments of one’s youth are only transitory anyway—like a sandstorm or the scent of perfume.

Synopsis

The protagonist is an unknown film director who used to dream of getting to Cannes but has yet to make a name for himself. He gets an unexpected call from his college friend Mija, who works for a large film company. She tells him about a retrospective on a film director and asks him to participate as a moderator in a Q&A. He accepts her offer of free tickets and goes to the cinema with Wangsha, who was posted at the Zaytun Division with him before.

Original novel by Sang Young Park

Sang Young Park won the 2016 Munhakdongne New Writers Award. Upon making his literary debut, he thought he’d be able to quit his day job. However, he still struggled to make ends meet and thus continued to work during the day. Park has since achieved his dream of being a full-time writer. He is the author of The Tears of an Unknown Artist, or Zaytun Pasta and A Manual for Love in the Big City. His short story “A Spot of Cod, Taste the Universe” won the 10th Young Writers Award (Grand Prize) and Heo Gyun Literary Award on 2019.

Adapted by Kim Yeon-jae

Kim Yeon-jae debuted as a playwright in 2017. In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, she has become doubtful of the humancentric world taken for granted on stage. Currently, Kim is interested in the mineral kingdom and the paleozoic geology, as well as post-Anthropocene drama.
