Lying down for six months!

Burn-out. X, who used to pursue his dream, success and freedom, refuses to engage in social activities and just lies down on his back. His wife, son, best friend and elderly mother each come up with their own strategy to put him back on his feet but to no avail. X does not budge—as if his body were stuck on the floor. But then he can’t be the only one struggling. As the tragedy of X starts spreading like a contagious disease, hidden pain and sorrow come to light. “I wish I had never been born!”

“A thrilling and witty work.”

- 2020 Play Postbox Jury’s Comment

The reading performance of The Tragedy of X drew a lot of laughter from the audience from start to finish. With its unpretentious lines and sharp humour vying to take the lead, the play leaves a unique lingering impression complemented by a drop of melancholy. At first, the protagonist’s anguish and conflict with people around him may give the impression of following the dramatic grammar of classical tragedy. However, the play goes on to consider such absurdities of capitalist society as daily concerns of unemployment and housing crises and university entrance exams, thereby presenting the most contemporary stage. In these highly unpredictable times, The Tragedy of X invites all to have a laugh and find clear coordinates of life.

Synopsis

“I don’t want to do anything.”

A 44-year-old man named Hyeon-seo sprawls out on the floor one day. He doesn’t want to endeavor, cling onto things and compete with others anymore. He’s exhausted from chasing after the world. His wife Do-hee, son Myeong-soo, friend Woo-seob and mother Young-ja all try to talk to him, but no amount of persuasion and anger can make him get up. As times goes by, everyone gets tired of Hyeon-seo lying in bed. Then Myeong-soo’s private tutor Ae-ri comes up with a suggestion…

Playwright Lee Yu-jin

Lee Yu-jin studied the nature and structure of language and became fascinated by the role of language as a memory and expression tool. Theater is her chosen mode of language. With her first play Aunt Moran, Lee started her theatrical work exploring the languages of various generations. She continues to write both comedies and tragedies, hoping that the world around her is a comedy.

Director Yoon Hye-jin

Focusing on senses rather than issues, Yoon Hye-jin has established her own unique world as a theater director. She first drew attention in 2013 as one of Art Council Korea’s Next Generation Directors and has since worked on a number of projects. She dreams of creating a poetic stage—like a ray of sunshine streaming through the window in the late afternoon.
