Rediscoveries of Korean Modern Drama 10 - The Art of Self-Defense by Song Yeong

The Art of Self-Defense is a series of ‘Rediscoveries of Korean Modern Drama’ presented by the National Theater Company of Korea (NTC Korea) which has introduced plays significant and meaningful in the Korean theater, including Living President Lee Joong Saeng and Sir, Here is a Soup for You. Written by Song Yeong, a representative writer of labor literature, The Art of Self-Defense is the second of the series this year after Fate written by Yun Baek-nam and chosen by modern and contemporary play advisors. Writer Song, who was born during the Japanese colonial period and had close experience with workers’ suffering, described their agony with an awfully pleasant satire. The play is reborn dynamically on stage through the sophisticated directing of Yoon Hansol, who received the award for “Best Play” at the Korea Theater Awards.
