"Groom in the United States and Bride in Joseon

Engaged only after exchanging photographs

Ended in a total fiasco"

From Maeil Shinbo in 1915

Completely deceived!

No way, it's impossible! How can this man who looks at least ten years older than the guy in the photo be my husband-to-be! Nothing but a joyless married life was waiting for Mary, a girl who reluctantly came to Hawaii for an arranged marriage, yielding to her father's strong will. The only comfort is the moment when she reads letters from Su-ok, her ex-lover. Fate, however, comes without warning like a summer rain. Barely enduring her life in Hawaii, Mary holds dear a gold ring, a reminder of the eternal love her ex-lover promised. One day, the old flame comes back to her life as if a turn of the Wheel of Fate brings the two together. A century ago, during the hot summer days of Hawaii, there were people who could hope for happiness only in their dreams. Watch their fate, while laughing and shedding tears together with them.

Rediscoveries of Korean Modern Drama 9 - Fate by Yun Baek-nam

'Rediscoveries of Korean Modern Drama' has staged Korean dramas which are meaningful but long forgotten in the Korean theatrical history. The 9th unearthed piece is Yun Baek-nam's Fate(1924), which opened a fresh chapter of the Korean modern theatre and was well-received by the public at the time. Fate is a both cheerful and painful portrait of the life of Korean immigrants to Hawaii in the 1920s. The play is reborn with a delicate interpretation of Kim Nak-hyoung, the director of All Nights on Earth and Macbeth.

Playwright Yun Baek-nam (1888~1954)

Yun Baek-nam, a playwright, novelist, and movie director, published Korea's first theater thesis titled 「Theater and Society」, and organized Minjung Theatre Company to perform adaptations and translations of western plays as well as his own works such as Lighthouse Keeper, A Strange Fate, and Ringing of the Watch-Night Bell. In 1930, he worked with Park Seung-hee and Hong Hae-sung to set up Kyungsung Small Theater and in 1931 participated in a new theater group, Society for Research in Dramatic Art, as one of the founding members. His works carrying tendencies of enlightenment and humanism are considered significantly meaningful in Korea's theatrical history.

Director Kim Nak-hyoung

Since he began his career at Sejong Dramatic Art Group at Sejong University, Kim Nak-hyoung has been active and recognized in various fields such as directing, dramatization and acting. His directorial debut was Naked Women. He was the representative of Theater Studio 76 and now is leading Juk-juk company. When selected as the winner of Best Performing Art at the first Doosan Artist Award in 2010, Kim Nak-hyoung was highly commended by judges saying, "The world and the authenticity of life he showed in his work undoubtedly deserve the award." He is Korea's veteran director, who is acclaimed for his new perspectives characterized by bold deconstruction and reconstruction while never fails to describe people with care and detail.
