Declare the state of the Plague and shut down the city

The Plague written by Nobel literature laureate Albert Camus is being reborn with Director Geun-hyung Park putting his unique touch on it. An island, as the stage, makes the reality of isolation more dramatic. The way Park interprets the play in a playful way enables what appears to be heavy in the original book to be more vivid. In an island plagued by ills and sickness, repeated isolation and deaths choke the lives, causing people from all walks of life to show their true color and fight tooth and nail against the plague. As in the moment of being infected with scenes relentlessly sweeping the stage, The Plague throws you in the question of ‘Fight or Flight.’

Synopsis

On a heavily windy island, Dr. Rieux was on his way out of examination room and accidentally found out a rat bled to death. In a few days, the number of rats killed surged to tens of thousands covering the island. The tragedy spiraled out of control, causing some of islanders to suffer fever and die in the end. The governor of the island ordered the residents not to leave the island...

Written by Albert Camus

"For his important literary production, which with clear-sighted earnestness illuminates the problems of the human conscience in our times" - Nobel Prize in Literature Evaluation Committee.

Camus released a book of sensation The Stranger in 1942, receiving the spotlight. In 1947, as Camus unveiled The Plague, he rose to a prominent fame. When Camus brought his book The Rebel to the world, the argument unfolding between Camus and Sartre made him all the more famous. At the age of 44, Camus won Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957 and passed away in a car crash in 1960. At the time of death, incomplete manuscript was found and this unfinished novel was finally released in 1994 as the title of Le Premier homme (The First Man)

Adapted and Directed by Geun-hyung Park

Art Director of ‘Theater Company ‘Golmokil'

Professor of Korean National University of Arts, School of Drama, Directing Department

Park joined ‘Theater Company 76’ in 1985 and founded ‘Theater Company Golmokil’ in 2003.

What makes Park stand out is how he omits and twists the story in a bold fashion. Indeed, his works are where the feeling of discomfort and humor go hand in hand. Park brings something dark and gloomy, someone desperate to the stage so as to ironically remind people of something hopeful. Park, who breaks the mold of formality and style and looks into the essence of it, is a free thinker in his pursuit of theater. As Park meets his beloved writer Albert Comus, characters who are getting over the time of uncertainty and fear with compassion towards people are coming alive on the stage.
