Two stories taking form on one stage

<The Father Le Père>, <The Mother La Mère>

The play has been nominated for France’s Prix Goncourt, one of the three major international literary prizes, and won the Molière Award, the highest honor in French theatre, as well as the British Olivier Award and the Tony Award in America in 2016. Florian Zeller, a young and talented playwright, coined a new word, “Zellerist”, and has grabbed the attention of the French literary world. The Korean audiences can now experience his masterpieces <The Father Le Père> and <The Mother La Mère> at the same time, providing a unique and fresh experience. The stage is one. However, this one stage produces two different but similar stories. The time which you can meet this isolated father and solitary mother on the same stage is not long enough.

This masterpiece by Florian Zeller that pierces through the human mind is introduced to Korean audiences

through the performance of Yoon So-jung, playing the mother

Yoon So-jung, a beautiful and elegant middle-aged woman, plays the role of Anne, the protagonist of Florian Zeller‘s Masterpiece <The Mother La Mère>. In the role of the Mother, she shows a deep sense of loss in the midst of solitude. Florian Zeller, a master of detailed psychological compositions, continuously amazed the audience with playful and clever scene compositions at the premiere in Paris, France in 2010. Following the premier, the play won the Molière Award for best Female Lead in 2011, and in 2015 it was performed at the Royal Bath Theatre in UK and won accolades all across Europe, marking the rise of a new star-playwright. And now, it’s finally time for this masterpiece to go up before the Korean audiences.

A mother overcome with loss starts obsessing over her family members.

Have you ever imagined a mother left alone in an empty house?

There is no doubt that her husband, who is on a business trip, is cheating on her. She is happy to see her son, all grown up all of a sudden, come back home after a big fight with his girlfriend. However, she can’t tell whether it’s all a dream or reality. Through chaotically repeating scenes, we are first invited to take part in the experience of the mother, pouring out unconditional one-sided love, after which we become a member of the family, sharing the exhaustion experienced by the family due to her unrelenting love. Coming out of the theater, the last choice is up to you. Do you shake the shoulder of Anne, in her red dress, or do you give a call to your mother, left alone at home?

Synopsis

Anne, a middle-aged woman, misses the time when she was taking care of her son and daughter, who are now all grown up and have left home. She is sure that her husband is cheating on her, and keeps asking him where he has been whenever he comes home late from work. Her son Nicholas suddenly visits home after a quarrel with his girlfriend, Élodie. Anne, thinking that she had lost her son to his girlfriend, shows a new red dress to her son and says to him, “let’s go for a walk.” The family is getting tired of her one-sided love and Anne is despairing at the thought that she is slowly turning into nothing but a nuisance.
