We survive every moment in life by The Skin of Our Teeth

Could we, by the skin of our teeth, save ourselves from today’s crisis?

The Skin of Our Teeth is a play by Thornton Wilder, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It is a story about a family who survives through disasters – the Ice Age, the Great Flood, and War – by the skin of their teeth, just as the play’s title suggests. However, even when they are in the face of death, their interest and curiosity leads them to trivial things: turning their attention toward simple inventions at the very moment when the whole family was about to freeze to death, or directing their eyes to the winner of a beauty contest in the face of an impending rainstorm that will flood the world into chaos. But such an ironic situation, where you don’t realize a crisis in the midst of it, happens in real life, not just in the fairy tale. We continue to face the repeated crisis of a relationship, which hangs by a thread in the intricate web of other relationships. And we might remain passive to the situation because of the trivial things of everyday life. That brings us to ask ourselves: can we really save ourselves from today’s crisis by the skin of our teeth?

The NTCK Young Director Series works with potent young artists

Thornton Wilder’s masterpiece returns to life in rare style!

Powerful young artists will occupy the Theatre Pan this June, turning it into a space full of dynamic stimuli. Director Park Ji-hye, heroin of the 12th NTCK Young Director Series who received Best New Director at the Dong-A Theatre Award, will once again take advantage of her specialty by recreating the original play in her own style. This will result in a fascinating spectacle, creating a perfect harmony of sense and sensibility. The art director Yeo Shin-dong, known for his alluring and distinct stage art, works with Jung Jae-il, a famous music director, who enriches the stage with his sonorous and stylish touch. And young actors, including Son Sang-kyu from the Yang-son Project, will play multiple roles with chameleon-like performances. Therefore, expect to see the most colorful and dynamic variation of Thornton Wilder’s enduring masterpiece!

A story about a family and their housemaid who lived through five millennia on earth

The story is about a family and their housemaid who have lived through for five millennia on earth, always surviving moments of dire crisis by the skin of their teeth. In Act I, they are faced with an impending Ice Age that will hasten the extinction of the species. In Act II, they meet the rainstorm that brings about the Great Flood and threatens to kill not only the whole family but humanity as a whole. Lastly in Act III, the shadow of the seven-year-long war falls upon the family, transforming their son into a war-veteran who instinctively resorts to violence like a demon. Could this family, swept over by the continued tides of crisis, make it through once again by the skin of their teeth?
