The collaboration between the National Theater Company of Korea (NTCK) and the Théâtre de Liège in Belgium, which began in 2018, came to fruition in 2022 with Strange Beauty. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was postponed several times. However, thanks to the strong determination of the artists and organizations from both countries, Strange Beauty finally premiered at Belgium’s Royal Festival de Spa in August 2022, before being presented to audiences in Seoul (September 2022) and Liège (December 2022). Spearheaded by director Bae Yo-sup and co-created by artists in various fields including acting, dance, sound, visual art, and video, Strange Beauty explores the essence of art and beauty through movements, colors, and lights—rather than as a play. What is beauty? Where does beauty come from? Why does humanity or nature appear to pursue a sense of beauty?
